FAQ

Who comes on the trips?

Lots of different people! Mostly women in their 50 – 70s have travelled with Pip & Co Travel, with some in their 40s and 80s also choosing our trips.

Travellers who share a love of discovery, learning, adventure, fun and kindness of any age are right for Pip & Co Travel trips!

I'm a Solo Traveller

We love having solo travellers on our trips. In fact many of our travellers join our trips on their own.

If you are keen to twin share, it is sometimes possible to match you with another solo traveller. This isn’t guaranteed, though, and if there isn’t another traveller available, you will need to pay the solo supplement.

The cost to have your own room varies for each trip. Check on the payment page or contact Penny for more information.

How fit do I need to be for this trip?

This tour is suitable for travellers with a moderate level of fitness. Expect:

  • Walking 8–10,000 steps daily on uneven ground
  • Climbing some stairs (especially in temple complexes)
  • Standing for 1–2 hours during tours
  • Getting in/out of vehicles and boats without assistance

Most activities are optional, so if there’s something you don’t feel like doing you can opt-out. Please contact Penny if you want to ask specific health and fitness questions. No question is silly!

What is the weather like?

The weather is warm all year round in Sri Lanka, although in the tea country it will be mild and you will need a cardigan/jumper. November is shoulder/mid season so you can expect some rain showers as the rainy season tails off. Average temperatures in the low lands will be approx 29.

Cash, Cards & Tipping

Most destinations accept a mix of cash and card payments. Major cities often have good access to ATMs, while more rural areas may be cash-only. It’s best to carry some local currency for small purchases, markets, or tipping.

Tipping customs vary by country — some cultures expect it, while others do not. We’ll provide detailed guidance before departure to help you navigate local etiquette with ease.

We usually suggest the group has a tip kitty to take the hassle and uncertainty out of tipping.

What are the payment terms?

You need to make a AUD $500 deposit to hold your spot.

The final balance of the trip is due 90 days before the start of the trip.

You can pay with a major credit card such as Visa or Mastercard (fees apply) or with a bank deposit. Please contact us to arrange a bank deposit. Payment plans can also be arranged.

Do I need Travel Insurance?

All Pip & Co Travellers will need to purchase comprehensive travel insurance prior to the trip.

If you need help with this, please contact us.

Do I need a Visa?

Visa requirements vary depending on your nationality but Australian passport holders do need a visa for Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka visas can be applied online before arrival. We will send out reminders to apply for your visa before the trip departure.

What flights should I book?

International flights are not included in your tour. You should aim to book flights that align with the official tour start and end dates. Where possible, arrive the day before to allow time to adjust to the local time zone and recover from long-haul travel. For this trip your arrival and departure airport is Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport.

Please note on the final day, you will need to factor in a 2.5 hour car trip to get from Galle to the airport.

What about meals?

There are big, buffet breakfasts (delicious!) included each day and most days lunch and dinner are not included. Except for the welcome and farewell dinners, the cooking class lunch and the high tea in Nuwara Eliya.

Depending on the day you will usually be travelling somewhere as a group and make a stop at a nice cafe/restaurant for lunch and you will have the choice of what to order (or in one or two case it might be a set menu or a buffet). You usually need to allow around AUD$8-10 per lunch and drink.

For dinner you might have the chance to head out somewhere if we are staying in town or eat at the hotel. I have found on my previous trips that the group tends to stick together and you won’t ever be by yourself (unless you want to be of course!) Budget AUD$10 for dinner but allow extra for beer/wine/cocktails.

We experienced a wonderful time in Vietnam with Penny. It was my first time on a guided tour and I thoroughly enjoyed not having to organise anything. Penny was friendly, approachable and had great local knowledge...I enjoyed that she scheduled some different experiences from the mainstream. I'm hoping to rebook with Pip & Co in the future.

We had an amazing family holiday in Hoi An thanks to Penny. Everything was so well organised, which meant we could relax and simply enjoy the experience. The itinerary was packed with fun, cultural and educational experiences that kept both adults and kids engaged. The local guides were friendly, knowledgeable and great with the kids. Having everything organised made the holiday stress free, and whenever we wanted suggestions or had questions, Penny was always happy to help.

Our family had a fabulous time on the Vietnam family trip with Pip & Co. Penny co-ordinated a fabulous itinerary of activities that had something of interest for all ages, from cultural activities, visiting ancient ruins and learning about the history of Hoi An to fun outings like cycling, kayaking and snorkelling. All the local guides were knowledgeable and enthusiastic and we felt like we had an authentic experience and learnt lots about Vietnamese culture and cuisine. The accomodation was ideal, spacious and comfortable in a great location with really helpful and friendly staff. Travelling with other families and experiencing the tour together was great fun for the kids and adults. The trip had a perfect mix of time for socialising and quiet relaxing. Penny provided really helpful advice pre-departure and was quick to assist with anything we needed during the tour. We would highly recommend Pip & Co to other families and are already dreaming about our next trip!!

My family and I joined the Family Trip in Vietnam and it was amazing. The accommodation was great; the planned activities were carefully selected; and the itinerary incorporated enough down time for the kids. Penny’s communication was great, and it was an added bonus to have someone on the tour who could speak Vietnamese. Thanks, Pip & Co Travel, for helping us create such special memories.

Thanks for a fabulous trip to Borneo, my first with Pip & Co. I made great friends and learnt so much about the local wildlife, beautiful birds and protecting their habitat. I loved the river boats trips and rainforest hikes.

A great small group tour company - most trips for independent women travelers. Some places are the common must do’s but then you do them in a different way, or do something totally unexpected- just the way to explore a destination

I can recommend Pip & Co Travel to ladies that enjoy a very well organised tour, small group, flexible itinerary, great hotels, eating delicious meals with the locals. I have recently returned from the Vietnam Tour and it was wonderful. Penny thinks of every small detail from being picked up at the airport to being with a knowledgeable guide all the way. Thanks for a great experience!

I had the most wonderful 11-day adventure in Sri Lanka! Being part of a small group of 10 women meant more time to explore and an opportunity to form strong friendships. The itinerary was excellent - fun and adventurous... it truly was a physical experience - I really felt like I was a part of Sri Lanka, not just a sight-seeer. Penny and her guides were exceptional and took excellent care of us. I highly recommend a Pip & Co. tour. Ros x
