Day 4 - My Son Temple Ruins

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel. Then it is time to discover the ancient temple ruins My Son, built by the Champa civilisation that preceded the Vietnamese. The marvellous temples are heavily influenced by Hinduism and its architecture are in a style reminiscent of Angkor Wat, albeit, on a much smaller scale. The Champa people were in fact Hindu and rose from the remnant of a much older civilisation – Funan.

My Son was the religious centre of the Champa kingdom from the second century. Now, it remains with red brick towers and sanctuaries, older than some of Southeast Asia’s greatest archaeological sites, including Bagan in Myanmar, Ayutthaya in Thailand, and Borobudur in Indonesia. People consider My Son as the pre-Angkor site in Vietnam, as these towers and sanctuaries were built from the 4th to the 13th century.

After you return to Hoi An, the rest of the afternoon and evening is free to relax and explore.

Inclusion: My Son by car

Accommodation: Lantana Riverside Hoi An Hotel (or similar)

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 5 - Kayak the Cam Thanh Mangroves & Indigo tie-dyeing workshop

Explore Cam Thanh mangrove forest under the power of your own paddle. This easy-going tour is good for inexperienced paddlers, you’ll spend 2-hours in your kayak (or stand-up-paddle board) and get a closer look at the unique ecosystem of Cam Thanh coco-palm mangrove forest

The trip starts at our kayak station in Cam Thanh. After a briefing on paddle safety and the area you will be kayaking, we’ll start to paddle to the palm islands where the most well-grown Nipa palms (locally known as cocopalm), are found. The palm forests provide the locals with products such as fish, shells and Nipa leaves, which are commonly used as a roofing material on local homes. Enjoy amazing landscapes and talk with local people as we paddle along the river. Lasting about two hours, it’s a great experience for first-time paddlers.

Later in the afternoon, you’ll head to the private studio of one of Vietnam’s top contemporary artists for a hands-on indigo workshop. Learn the traditional Japanese shibori tie-dye technique, and leave with your own beautifully blue creation—a one-of-a-kind souvenir from a quietly magical day. Le Thuy (www.lethuy.asia) and her private studio is the perfect place for this hands-on workshop. You’ll leave with your very own indigo-dyed creation—a truly personalised souvenir.

FAQ

Who comes on the trips?

Lots of different families! This trip is aimed at families with kids aged 4 – 13 years old. Any family can come – single parent with one child, two parents with three children – we can accommodate you.

Travellers who share a love of discovery, learning, adventure, fun and kindness are right for Pip & Co Travel trips!

If you have a family situation or kids with different needs, I am more than happy to chat with you and see if this is the perfect trip for you and your family.

I'm a Solo Traveller

We love having solo travellers on our trips. In fact many of our travellers join our trips on their own. But this trip is a trip for families. Please check out our women’s small group trips.

How fit do I need to be for this trip?

This tour is suitable for travellers with a moderate level of fitness. Expect:

  • Walking 8–10,000 steps daily on uneven ground
  • Climbing some stairs
  • Standing for 1–2 hours during the walking tour
  • Getting in/out of vehicles without assistance
  • Kayaking and snorkelling
  • Optional bike riding

Everything is aimed at kids and parents.

If there’s something you don’t feel like doing you can opt-out. Please contact Penny if you want to ask specific health and fitness questions. No question is silly!

What is the weather like?

The weather is hot in July in Central Vietnam, with plenty of sunshine and blue skies expected throughout the month. Temperatures remain high and whilst still predominantly dry, the odd shower is not out of place helping to temper the hot weather (avg temp: 31 °C).

Most of our activities are planned for the morning, so the afternoons are free for you to relax, or cool down in the pool or at the beach.

Cash, Cards & Tipping

Carrying a mix of cash and card is a good idea. Major cities often have good access to ATMs, while more rural areas may be cash-only. Vietnamese Dong is the local currency and the exchange rate is approximately AUD$1 = VND 17,000

We usually suggest the group has a tip kitty to take the hassle and uncertainty out of tipping. This will be for specialist guides and drivers.

What are the payment terms?

You need to make a AUD $500 deposit to hold your spot for your family.

The final balance of the trip is due 90 days before the start of the trip.

You can pay with a major credit card such as Visa or Mastercard (fees apply) or with a bank deposit. Please contact us to arrange a bank deposit. Payment plans can also be arranged.

Do I need Travel Insurance?

All Pip & Co Travellers will need to purchase comprehensive travel insurance prior to the trip.

If you need help with this, please contact us.

Do I need a Visa?

Visa requirements vary depending on your nationality but Australian passport holders do need a visa for Vietnam. Vietnam visas need to be applied online before arrival and cost USD$25. We will send out reminders to apply for your visa before the trip departure.

What flights should I book?

International flights are not included in your tour. You should aim to book flights that align with the official tour start and end dates. Where possible, arrive the morning of or the night before the start date.

For this trip your arrival and departure airport is Danang.

Many cities in Australia have direct flights to Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi) and then you can  transfer to a domestic flight to Danang.

Alternatively you might choose to fly via an Asian hub city like Singapore, Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur.

You arrival and departure airport transfers are included.

Touring Saigon with Penny was great. The best part – the food and going to little local spots where Penny could order for us and explain local food choices. Also being able to learn how to greet locals and order coffee and in doing so – sit and people watch.

I was a solo traveller for the Wiradjuri event and Penny and her team made me feel so welcome. It was great to be able to learn about Wiradjuri culture and language in a perfect setting. I am looking forward to the next one!

I had the time of my life with Penny and Pip and Co. Vietnam was amazing but made even more so with a great small group of ladies, amazing local guides and so many real experiences. From lantern making, to cooking classes, to floating markets it was an experience I’ll never forget and just can’t help but rave about since
